Find out what we're doing to maintain our sustainability
At Chiltern Railways we aim to deliver easier, greener and better services for customers and local communities. This includes monitoring and seeking to reduce the impact our operations have on residents and lineside neighbors. As a predominantly diesel operator we have launched our 2030 Vision (Chiltern Railways 2030 Vision | Chiltern Railways) which sets our plans to modernise and decarbonise our predominantly diesel fleet of trains this decade.
Over the last year we have delivered a number of new initiatives including using hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel in our locomotive trains, reducing carbon emissions by up to 90% and particulates by up to 85%. We have also joined the Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSBs) Air Quality Monitoring Network to further understand the challenges with air pollution at our stations. This data will help to inform investment in initiatives to improve air quality.
Sustainability is also about the positive impacts that rail transport has for our local communities and economies. Our Annual Social Value Report measures our contribution to economic growth and social development across our network. Understanding Chiltern’s Social Value contribution is important as it helps policymakers, taxpayers and customers to consider the benefits of support for and future investment in the railway.
