Storm Ciarán - Weather Warnings in place until Friday 3 November 2023

Passengers are urged to plan ahead with Storm Ciarán set to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall across Britain.

Updated: 16:30 on Thursday 2 November 2023 [No changes made]

Problem

Journeys are likely to be affected across the rail network with yellow and amber weather warnings issued by the Met Office until Friday 3 November.

Passengers are advised to check their journeys before travelling today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday). Network Rail staff and train operators are working around the clock to keep passengers moving.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in some areas could affect journeys across Wales, the south of England and the Midlands today, and across the north east of England and central and eastern Scotland on today and tomorrow.

Owing to the adverse weather conditions, passengers should allow extra time for their journeys and check before travelling as services may be disrupted.

Impact

Currently Chiltern Railways services are not expecting to be significantly impacted by Storm Ciarán over the coming days, however the situation could change as the storm develops.

Other train operators across the South of England are expecting to have train services significantly disrupted. Some will be operating emergency timetables and it may not be possible to complete your journeys.

Advice

The best places to check for current live information will be:

Ticket validity and refunds

  • For passengers travelling with directly impacted train operators (see the National Rail Enquiries page for an up to date list), tickets dated for Thursday 2 November will also be valid to use tomorrow, Friday 3 November instead. This applies to Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance tickets.
  • Chiltern Railways and all other train operators not directly impacted will also accept any connections or through tickets dated Thursday 2 November for travel on Friday (tomorrow). For example, if you have a ticket that includes travel with an impacted train operator and travel with Chiltern Railways, your ticket will be accepted when traveling with us also.
  • If any part of your journey is via London Underground, you will be required to purchase a new ticket for the London Underground leg of your journey if you travel tomorrow.
  • If your train is cancelled, delayed or rescheduled, or a Do Not Travel warning is in place, you have the option to cancel your journey and get a full fee free refund from the original retailer.
